Billion Dollar Blimps

Last week the Army test flew the first of what it calls the Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle. The LEMV is an airship drone the length of a football field and 7 stories high, meant to provide reconnaisance for up to 3 weeks at a time without refueling or a crew. Northrup Grumman is building three of them on a $517 million contract, and production versions are expected to cost between $200 and $500 million, depending on options.

The test flight was conducted from ….. Lakehurst, New Jersey. You can’t make this stuff up.
