The Last Mile

Encountered a colossal downtown traffic jam in Casablanca getting to the airport on Saturday mid-day, but about an hour later I was at the airport 2 hours ahead of takeoff.  Wanted to pay for checking a second piece of luggage with Royal Air Maroc, but the guy at the counter didn’t want to deal with the paperwork and urged me to take it to the gate and ‘come back if there is a problem.’

There was a problem, but I talked the guys at security into letting me bring my carry-on plus computer bag, and luckily the 737-800 (go Boeing!) for my flight was only 2/3rds full and there was room to spare for luggage.  The seat wasn’t *quite* as tiny and uncomfortable as the Iberia flight going down, and I lucked into an empty middle seat so I at least had elbow room while having an interesting conversation with my row neighbor, a Czech software guy coming back from a work/vacation trip in Morocco.

Laid over on Saturday night in Madrid, thoroughly exhausted, and it was a great time to get a room upgrade with Marriott Gold status at their partner AC Hotels, a block from the Bernebeau … fantastic suite with a comfy couch that I fell asleep on watching a movie from my tablet, output to the LG bigscreen in the living room via an HDMI cable.  I knew there was a reason I kept bringing that cable!

Gearing up now to check out, another cab back to Madrid airport, 1 p.m. flight to Amsterdam and then …. my own bed.  For a week.  A WHOLE week!  Awesome … I’m trying to remember what that’s like.

*update 2 — Easy arrival at Schiphol from Madrid until I lugged my 3 pieces of luggage onto the train and sat there for 10 minutes and then the PA said “There are no trains in Schiphol at this time and trains at the platform will not leave due to order of the fire department.”

“Taxi!”

Home in 25 minutes, interesting conversation with an Egyptian cab driver.
