What a saga this afternoon watching the beached boat shown in the previous blog post.
These guys were aground with the tide going out on the point just to the West of my place, so I sat down with the camera to watch the drama. Don’t know how they beached, they might have lost their anchor.
The friendly crab boat ‘Ichiban’ came to their aid around 3 and after several attempts and one broken tow line, dragged them off the beach. HURRAY! Of course, for 15 minutes while the line was taut they were just beating their rudder mercilessly against the bottom on every wave, the mast shivering in reaction. Ouch.
Now, 150 yards from shore, they let loose the tow line and thank the Ichiban …. and then can’t get their main raised, apparently have no engine of any kind, and go directly BACK TO THE BEACH in five minutes, grounded again! INCONCEIVABLE, and that word means exactly what I think it means!
Ichiban helps them again, valiantly drags them off the beach, gets them out into water, and then helps them tie up to a buoy. Later, they come back and help them find the anchor. What nice guys! However … the 3 guys on the battered little sloop, I don’t think I’d sail to Hadlock with that crew.
